  • IEEE PES Atlanta Engineer of the Year 2017 - Haile Gashaw

    Haile Gashaw has been working his entire professional career in the power industry. Having graduated from college with a BSEE degree with a concentration in power, he worked in Power System Operation, Protection and Control, and Test areas in Ethiopia. He had also coordinated a multimillion dollar high voltage transmission line and substation construction projects. Haile obtained a graduate certificate in power automation from Schmalkalden College of Engineering in Germany and moved to the US. He joined Georgia Power Company in 2001 and worked as a senior Protection and Control Engineer in the Transmission organization and is currently working as a senior staff Reliability Engineer in the Distribution organization charged with Distribution Protection and DER interconnection policies, testing and approval of Distributed Generation interconnections to GPC’s distribution system and its system protection coordination.


  • IEEE PES Atlanta Young Engineer of the Year 2017 - Anthony Maymi Marcano

    Anthony Maymi Marcano discovered a passion for electrical engineering at a young age. His father, an electrician, would often take him to work and Anthony would find himself fascinated by the intricate electrical systems. Now 31-years-old, Anthony lives out that passion everyday serving the power and energy industry as an electrical engineer at Burns & McDonnell. With more than 10 years of experience, Anthony has supported and helped design more than 20 projects throughout his career. With a focus on substation design and protection and control design, Anthony serves as the lead protection and control engineer for all projects for the firm. He is well respected by Burns & McDonnell’s power and energy clients for his insight and technical knowledge. Anthony has been actively involved in IEEE since attending college and served as the secretary and treasurer of the IEEE PES Atlanta chapter from 2013-2014. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Anthony is also a registered professional engineer in Georgia
